Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
