A mere eight weeks prior when the young forward was standing on the Stadium of Light pitch, looking confused as Unai Emery berated him over failing to anticipate a penetrating pass. During that period, as Villa failed to win in six, doubts remained whether Rogers' form were an indicator or the source of the team's broader struggles.
“As Rogers swept in his second… Emery ripped off his thick padded coat, spread his arms and roared.”
On Sunday, though, the touchline reaction was entirely far more favourable. When the in-form star drilled in his brace-sealing goal to reclaim the lead for Villa, the boss ripped off his jacket, opened his arms and roared. The team were on their way to a tenth straight victory , having failed to win their opening six games, now sit a mere three points off the leaders Arsenal.
It remains a particularly tough question to resolve. Past precedent, the traditional standing of this institution, suggests not. Moreover, they have not been completely commanding in many games, despite the fact the positive results have stacked up.
As per statistical analysis, in only two games has the team had an expected goals figure significantly higher than the other team. For a club which has put together 10 in a row, they look strangely fragile – but currently the fine lines are falling their way.
The prevailing tactic looks like to exchange chances with the opposition before hoping their star man to save the day with two clinical strikes. It happened at Leeds, it occurred against West Ham, and it happened when facing the Red Devils.
The initial strike came from a superb shot, bent right inside the upright from a wide position. His brace-completing goal was essentially a slight scruffier version of the opener capitalizing on a setup by his strike partner.
“Rogers’ right foot is now akin to Robben’s legendary left: forewarned does not mean forearmed, and stopping him is another matter entirely.”
Reason suggests otherwise. In the recent win, the opposition registered a greater number of attempts and more efforts on goal. Villa have won each of their last eight by just one goal. They’ve conceded in all except one of those matches.
A reversion to average may well be the biggest rival Villa will encounter in the near future. Rogers, in all likelihood, will not continue to blasting the football into the net's top corner indefinitely.
Could it be an alternative path in which, instead of outcomes regressing to match displays, the team's displays improve to justify the wins. Important figures may yet find their top level.
Maybe within that lies the potential of a genuine bid, yet it seems unlikely cannot keep relying on one man.
Yet, this is a surprise. It seemed improbable Aston Villa would sit third at Christmas. And without a doubt two months ago, no one envisioned the midfielder as the year closed would be spearheading a title charge while establishing himself as a crucial player for the national team.
This winning streak must be cherished precisely because it seems so surreal. When the hero stood in front of the Villa faithful at the final whistle orchestrating the applause, he appeared to be loving the experience. As he deserves to. These runs of form are uncommon in the sport and should be relished.
