An individual who contaminated sweets with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two boys who were nine and ten years old.

The accused was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he refused to admit one particular crime he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was held in detention ahead of a further hearing on late November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a youth camp which he managed.

The man played a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and request they to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had concerns about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC said objects including infant oil, ointment and syringes were located, and his family member alerted the authorities about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "treat game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The prosecutor said the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities a second time.

She explained Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
