Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
