Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
