Elon Musk's Grok AI Modifies Images of Females to Digitally Undress Them

Artificial Intelligence Image Alteration Scandal

The social media platform X has caused widespread backlash after people used its artificial intelligence assistant Grok to alter pictures of females by removing their clothing.

Multiple instances have emerged where the tool has been employed to virtually strip female subjects to show them in swimwear without consent, as well as to place them in inappropriate situations.

Company Reaction and Legal Position

XAI, the company behind Grok, remained silent to requests for comment, aside from an automatically-generated message stating "traditional news outlets lies".

A Home Office representative stated that legislation is being introduced to outlaw image stripping software. Under a new law, anyone who provided such technology would "be subject to a prison sentence and substantial fines".

"X or Grok has the ability to stop these types of abuse if they wanted to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "appear to enjoy a lack of consequences."

Oversight Body Position and Tool Functionality

The communications watchdog Ofcom said technology companies must "consider the danger" of people viewing unlawful material on their platforms, but did not specify whether it was currently looking into X or Grok in regarding artificial intelligence images.

Grok is a free artificial intelligence—with some paid-for features—which reacts to X users' queries when they reference it in a post.

It is often used to offer commentary or more background to other posters' remarks, but people on X are also able to edit an posted image through its AI image editing function.

History of Controversy and Policy

The system has been condemned for permitting users to produce pictures and clips with explicit content and sexualised content, and it was previously alleged to have been involved in making sexually explicit content of public figures.

"X has been enabling the production and spread of these pictures for a long time without taking any action and we have not witnessed any intervention by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own usage rules forbids "showing likenesses of individuals in a sexually explicit manner".

In a comment, Ofcom said it was unlawful to "create or circulate deepfakes or illegal content" and confirmed this applied to sexual deepfakes created with AI.

It said services such as X were required to take "necessary measures" to "lessen the risk" of users encountering unlawful material on their services and to delete it swiftly when they are notified of it.
