Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.

Police say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Police then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for information.

A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
